What is a crystal?

So, what is a crystal exactly? Crystal is a generic term for a variety of geologic formations. Geodes, metals, gems, minerals, and more. They represent the most basic components of our physical lives and are a direct connection to the powerful and infinite Earth.

Sometimes they represent extraterrestrial components in the case of meteorites. They may even derive from natural processes occurring on the Earth, not directly form the Earth itself, as in the case of amber. The word crystals is an umbrella term to refer to all of these things.

Crystals can be translucent or opaque. They come in every colour imaginable. They can be all shapes and sizes. They can be a solid colour or patterned. They can be smooth or rough.

Each crystal is unique in its chemical make-up, density, and appearance. In addition to its chemical and physical attributes, each crystal has an energetic component. As Einstein discovered, matter and energy are interchangeable. Crystals are very sensitive to energy, conducting it and emitting it. We choose to work with one crystal over another based on its energy characteristicsOpens in a new tab.

What do Wiccans use crystals for?

Wiccan stones and crystals are powerful tools which witches use to enhance their craftOpens in a new tab.

Stones are alive and choose to work with us. They will not be powerful unless you recognize that they are your partner– not just tools which you alone control.

Crystals serve as a container of magickal energies. Energies like thought and intention can be picked up by the crystals and then sent out to the world. They can be used either as a primary tool for your magickal work, or you can use their natural energies to supplement other work you might be doing.

The color of crystals is very important as well. Color is just energy too, just as we require light to see it. Each color has a different correspondence depending on its vibration and resonance. One color can be used to aid in healing work, but another color will be better suited to a love spell.

Since crystals are stores of energy, you should cleanse them thoroughly upon first use and periodically after that. You’ll also want to charge them before using them in any spells. Cleansing and charging are described towards the end of this article.

Here are some example uses of Wiccan stones and crystals in a witch’s practice.

  • Marking the circle.
  • Healing. Some crystals have specific healing properties, for instance to heal a particular system or part of the body. However most crystals (and even most stones like those you would find on a riverbed) can also be used for healing.
  • Jewelry like pendants, earrings, bracelets, and other magickal pieces. The stones can be charged for a specific purpose (protection, healing, etc) then worn to let the energies with which you charged it to surround you. Crystals can be charged and work in your daily activities or for a specific purpose like dealing with a negative person, a job interview, or giving a presentation.
  • Good luck charms and talismans.
  • Protection such as wearing crystal amulets.
  • Scrying which is peering into a crystal’s surface for visions. This works best with crystals that have smooth, reflective surfaces like hematite.
  • Meditation with the crystal.
  • Divination work.
  • Honoring deities.
  • Decorating magickal tools like wands, chalices, pentacles, etc.
  • Spellwork and manifesting change.
  • Astral projection.
  • Dream work, dream analysis, improving sleep, ending bad dreams, and lucid dreaming.
  • Changing the energy flow in the home.

Where can I find crystals?

These days, you can find Wiccan stones and crystals just about anywhere. The easiest way to find them is online. You can easily purchase a ‘starter kit’ which will have all the stones you need to get started. I recommend this oneOpens in a new tab.

If you want to purchase your crystals individually, there are many online shops which sell a variety of crystals and stones in many sizes.

If you’re very new to your witchcraft practice, you may want to see if you can find a local Wiccan, occult, spiritual, or metaphysical store in your area.

If you are near a natural history museum, often times these museums have a gift shop with a variety of rocks, stones, and crystals for sale. Gift shops near natural landmarks often carry a variety of crystals as well.

By visiting a store in person, you can inspect the crystals in person and see which ones you’re drawn to. You can take your time to select the right ones, and ask employees any questions you may have.

As you look at the crystals, pay attention to your emotions and sensations. Do you feel a strong positive emotion? Do you feel a pull? The right crystal for you will let you know. Follow your intuition and find the stone for you.

You can also find crystals in places which are easy on the wallet. Keep on the lookout during hikes and picnics, or while at the beach. You never know when you might just find a little gem to include in your practice!

Also talk to fellow witches who have stones that you’d like to use. Ask if you can borrow one of their crystals temporarily, or you can even do a swap if you have a stone they’d like to have as well.

What do I need to get started?

Whatever you feel comfortable with! You may think crystals sound interesting, but don’t necessarily want to start including them in your practice. That’s ok! You may also want to dive straight in to become a crystal witch. That’s fine too! Or maybe you like the look of a particularly crystal, and want to include it in your altar because of its color and the pull you feel when you gaze at it. Also totally fine.

In any case, it’s good to have a basic working knowledgeOpens in a new tab.

If you do decide to include stones in your practice, my one recommendation is to start with quartz. As you’ll read below, it’s a great general purpose crystal which you can quickly get started with. It also comes in handy in a pinch if you want to do crystal work but don’t have the specific crystal your spell calls for. You can substitute quartz in for any other crystal.

How Do I Cleanse My Crystals?

Upon getting a new crystal, you may be very excited to start using it! Before adding it to your practice however, you must first cleanse the crystal, both physically and spiritually. Crystals are so useful to us because they hold onto energy, however this can work against us if they are holding onto stored negative energy.

Negative energy can come from anyone the crystal was in contact with. Former owners, the clerk at the store where you bought it, someone who cleaned and polished it, someone who excavated it, etc. Even other shoppers at the store where you made your purchase can have a negative effect. It’s a good idea to always cleanse new crystals, especially if you will be doing healing.

First, give your crystal a small bath. Research the type of crystal and see if it’s ok to get it wet. If so, make a bowl of salt water. Allow the crystal to soak in the water to wash off dust, dirt, or any other physical remains that may have been transported from the crystal’s origin to your practice.

If your crystal should not go into water, you can take a small brush like a whisk or toothbrush, to gently give it a dry bathing. This will brush off any small particles which have traveled with the stone.

Next, cleanse the crystal spiritually. It is a sacred object and you should cleanse and consecrate it as you would any other magickal tool. Use whatever ritual you feel comfortable with, or whatever ritual you might already use for cleansing.

For some ideas, meditate and focus your intention on cleansing the crystal, do a candle ceremony to bless the crystal, or burn sage or incense around the crystal. The ritual to use will come to you.

How Do I Charge My Crystals?

Crystals absorb energy so if you place them in contact with powerful, positive forces, they will absorb this energy and become even more powerful.

One way to charge is to place your crystal in with sunlight. If you can place the crystal outdoors, this is best. If not, place it on a windowsill and perhaps crack the window to get some direct sunlight onto the crystal.

Another way to charge is with moonlight. You can do this similarly as you would do for sunlight. Charge your crystal under the light from the full and new moons.

A third way to charge your crystal is with water. If you were able to cleanse your crystal with water, then immerse the crystal into a natural body of water like a stream, lake, pond, or ocean. If you don’t have access to a body of water, you can collect some rainwater in a vessel and use it instead.

A final way to charge your crystal is to bury it in the ground to connect with the Earth. If you’re able, bury the stone outdoors and leave for a few days. If you don’t have access to tools for burial, you can place the crystal next to a plant or bush. Or, if you don’t have anywhere you can place the crystal outside, then you can bury or place the crystal in a potted plant.

How Should Crystals Be Stored?

Two common options for storage of Wiccan stones and crystals are to wear them, or to place them around your home. Wearing a crystal is a great way to keep their energies close to you. You can wear them as jewelry in the form of pendants, rings, etc, or simply put one in your pocket. Jewelry is best to ensure that the stones are not lost, and it keeps them close to your skin.

You can also keep crystals around your home. This allows their energies to permeate your space. You can place them strategically and deliberately to give you a balanced and harmonious home. Stones which you use everyday in your spellwork can be kept on or close to your altar. They can also be stored in a sacred bag which you’ve consecrated.
